A Chart For All Reasons
By Dawn Roth
As an educator you are most likely called upon to interpret
many types of data surrounding your class.
Nearing the end of the year, this is even truer. I would
like to share a basic charting technique I use that is simple
yet allows me to track and compare information to the amazement
of my colleagues.
I keep many copies of blank charts that allow me to fill
in along the top and side and a corresponding grid. If I need
to see who returned a form, it goes on the chart. When I give
reading assessments they are entered on my chart. If administration
calls for a survey of my students and achievement it is presented
on a chart.
This versatile tool is one we see all the time in our lesson
plans, grade books and teacher's editions. I am surprised
that teachers do not use this tool for themselves.
I adapt almost any task to it and get the best results. My
interns' weekly duties are planned and understood. I keep
track of my paperwork for special needs students at a glance.
I know who gets which awards and parent notification at year's
end for assemblies.
My wish is that you start to see some ways to make your job
simpler using this powerful chart.
